A company known for archiving images for photographers will be jumping into stock photography in a big way during the next few months.

PhotoShelter is asking independent photographers to submit imagery to a new photo library that is expected to be ready for image buyers during November.

Photographers joining the PhotoShelter Collection will be charged nothing to join the system or upload images. The company will return 70 percent of sales revenue to image creators and will spend $1 million marketing the new library during 2008, said Grover Sanschagrin, vice president of sales and marketing.

There is however an application process, he said. Among other things, photographers must submit sample images for approval before starting regular submissions. The intake system was set to launch on this date.
