NBC Universal says the launch of its new online photo library makes it the first major television or film studio to license and distribute its own imagery. Other Hollywood studios license imagery through third-party stock photography distributors.

The NBC Universal Photo Bank web site announced on this date is a slick offering of celebrity imagery developed with technology from Digital Railroad, a New York company that provides online services to some 550 photographers and 30 news and stock photo agencies.

The web site offers access to about 12 million digital and film-based images dating back as far as the 1940s. The company said it will provide personal service from sales team in New York City.

"Visit our web site to obtain compelling images ranging from last night's coverage of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and his guests to the recent hit series franchises of West Wing, Will and Grace, Friends, Seinfeld and Cheers to the star studded productions staged by Bob Hope, Jack Benny or Jack Paar," the company said in a section on the web site that describes its services.

The images are publicity and advertising stills from various NBC Universal properties, including USA Network, Bravo, the SciFi Channel, Telemundo, MSNBC and CNBC.

Digital Railroad has recently signed deals with several high-profile groups, including the Advertising Photographers of America (APA), the White House News Photographers Association, Blend Images and the NCAA Photo Archive.
