Adobe Stock Photos Expands Collection . . .

Stock Asylum Staff Report
October 13, 2005

Adobe Stock Photos has again expanded its royalty-free stock photography collection and has opened several pathways through which individual photographers and small stock distributors can submit imagery.

The company announced that it is adding photography from Masterfile, Image Source Ltd., Brand X Pictures (a JupiterImages brand) and IPN Relay to its royalty-free collection of 450,000 images.

At the same time, Adobe said it now will accept images from photographers and small suppliers through arrangements with several image partners, including Image Source, Getty Images, Masterfile and IPN Relay.

In an unrelated announcement, Adobe said it has received U.S. Department of Justice approval for its acquisition of competitor Macromedia. Adobe still faces regulatory hurdles in Europe. The company said it expacts to close the deal this fall.

IPN Relay is a new service created by the Independent Photography Network as a conduit to Adobe Stock Photos. The Independent Photography Network also operates IPNStock, which sells rights-managed imagery.

The new service also will offer digital asset management solutions for photographers, illustrators, designers, art directors and others who need to distribute work electronically, the company said.

Jeffrey Roberts, president of International Photography Network, said IPN Relay already has arrangements with three royalty-free distributors -- Blend, Alaska Stock and Images.com -- under the new Adobe program.

Due to contractual arrangements with Adobe, Roberts could not talk about the financial details of the deals his company will offer photographers.

But, he said there will be an upfront charge based on the number of images. He added that IPN will take a percentage of sales revenues in addition to whatever Adobe takes. Roberts said the companies that have already signed up appear happy with the overall package.

"We are looking to make photographers' businesses better," Roberts asserted.

James Alexander, director of Adobe Stock Photos said interested photographers should "talk to each of the participating companies to discuss its specific submission process and negotiate the best contractual terms."

"While Adobe does not prescribe any guidance to these companies in terms of screening images, we do rely on their expertise in selecting for inclusion in Adobe Stock Photos the kinds of images being sought by today's designers," Alexander added.

Alexander said his company is committed to helping small royalty-free sellers connect directly with the marketplace. Adobe Stock Photos has not disclosed how much money it takes from each royalty-free license it sells.

Adobe Stock Photos is a unique approach to selling stock images. Creative professionals access the library while using Adobe graphics and photography software products like InDesign and Photoshop.

In addition to the new suppliers, the Adobe Stock Photos collection also has images from Photodisc and Digital Vision, both owned by Getty Images; Comstock, Creatas, Goodshoot, itstock and Thinkstock, all owned by JupiterImages; royalty-free by zefaimages; and amana of Japan.
