Aurora Launches Outdoor Collection . . .

Stock Asylum Staff Report
July 19, 2005

A new collection of outdoor sports and adventure photography should help fill an obvious void in rights-managed stock.

Aurora, a stock provider from Portland, Maine, said its new outdoor library launches with an initial collection of 3,000 images from photographers like Paolo Marchesi, Joel Sheagren, Gregg Adams, Jeff Singer and Tony Demin.

The collection will blend outdoor lifestyle and concept images with hard core adventure photos, according to Peter Dennen, the associate director in charge of the library. Dennen, himself an outdoor photographer, said the new library will bring together some of the best work of some 90 outdoor shooters.

Like most stock photo categories, outdoor/adventure is available at general image libraries like Alamy and Corbis. And a number of individual photographers offer such work directly to advertisers, graphic designers and publishers. But, unlike other stock categories, no distributor in the United States has given this subject the kind of serious attention it deserves.

Outdoor photography fills a number of communications needs. More and more Americans spend recreational hours fishing, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping, surfing, biking and pursuing other such activities.

Whole industries have sprung up around these pursuits, creating a growing need for related imagery. As always, manufacturers license photos to promote products while publishers seek images for specialty magazines and instructional books.

In addition, graphic designers and other professional communicators increasingly use images of outdoor sports to represent concepts like strength, success, failure, striving and challenge.

Aurora has represented editorial photography for over 12 years. More recently, the company branched out into advertising and design imagery. Clients include National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Smithsonian Geo, Apple Computer, L.L. Bean and Volkswagen.
