As the son of two amateur photographers, Mark A. Johnson
probably didn't stand a chance of finding a mundane and secure profession.
"I started taking pictures when I was 11 or 12 years old because
both my parents liked photography and got me interested in it,"
says Johnson. "My mom and I built a darkroom in a spare room and
I spent a lot of time there fooling around with negatives and prints."
He began his photographic
career at the age of 14, shooting surfing in Hawaii where he grew up.
As an amateur surfing photographer, he was published in both Surfer
and Surfing magazines.
"I decided to go pro when I was 27, so I went to Brooks Institute
in Santa Barbara. I have been a full time photographer ever since,"
Johnson says.
Now based in Queensland, Australia, Johnson is known for his water sport
and extreme sport photography, as well as his people, nature and wildlife
work. His photographs have been used by Microsoft, General Mills, Marriott
Hotels, The Gap, Tandy and Warner Brothers.

Johnson’s work also has appeared in numerous magazines, including
Outside, Time, Delta Airlines Sky, TV Guide and most major water sports
magazines.
"Although I have done assignments, I've mostly been a stock photographer
because I enjoy the freedom of doing what I want when I want,"
Johnson says.
His stock photography is represented by Corbis, Alamy, Mira and workbookstock.com
He is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers and StockArtistsAlliance.
